Isaac Zebra Ssenyange Jnr stormed the round of 32 at the IBA Championships on Wednesday after he defeated Greek boxer Ritzakis Thodoris in the elite men's 67-71 Kg Light Middleweight category.
Ssenyange's next opponent is Eskekhan Madiev, a Georgian who defeated the then Uganda Bombers captain Shadir Musa Bwogi in the welterweight category round of 16 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
At the time, Bwogi was Uganda's only hope for a boxing medal following the early exit of teammates David Ssemujju and Catherine Nanziri.
While Bwogi looked sharp, he lost by split decision as judges awarded a 3-1 victory to Madiev. The scores were 29-27, 28-28, 26-30, 26-30, 26-30 in favour of Madiev.
"I thought Bwogi could have got past Madiev, but his point was deducted," Ssenyange told Pulse Uganda Sports.
The loss ended Uganda's Olympic Games medal hopes in the sport as the long wait continued. Ssenyange describes his next bout as a redemption fight for Uganda.
"This is a redemption fight for Uganda. I want to eliminate him from this World Championships and get some sweet revenge for my brother Shadir."
"It's a revenge fight; he eliminated us from the Olympics so he will face the wrath," Ssenyange added ahead of the fight on Saturday.
