Kenya delivers unexpected boxing upsets at the Africa Olympic Games qualifiers, signaling strong contention for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The boxing rings of the Dakar Arena witnessed intense action and major upsets during the Africa Olympic Games boxing qualifiers this past Saturday.

As contenders from across the continent gathered to prove their mettle, it was the Kenyan pugilists who emerged in the spotlight, taking down formidable opponents and setting an imposing tone for the matches ahead.

In what is already being heralded as the highlight of the qualifiers, Kenya national team captain Boniface Mogunde delivered a masterful knockout that sent shockwaves through the boxing community.

Taking on Morocco's revered middleweight champion and Rio 2016 bronze medallist, Mohammed Rabii, Mogunde put on a clinical display of his boxing prowess in the welterweight division match.

From the outset, Mogunde demonstrated his agility and tactical precision. As the rounds progressed, the Kenyan adopted a dynamic strategy, striking from a safe distance.

In his pursuit to land a blow on Mogunde, Rabii often seemed to be playing catch-up. Although he made several attempts, the Moroccan found it challenging to connect with any significant punches against his constantly adapting opponent.

The defining moment came in the first minute of the second round when Rabii, perhaps out of frustration or miscalculation, walked right into Mogunde's devastating right punch.

The crushing blow caught Rabii square on the jaw, momentarily freezing him in place. Seconds felt like minutes as the Moroccan champion stood motionless with his guard up, only to collapse backward onto the canvas.

Although he displayed the heart of a warrior by pulling himself up swiftly, the referee's discerning eyes noticed the signs of a boxer who couldn't go on.

To the astonishment of many, including a seemingly surprised Mogunde, the bout was declared in the Kenyan's favor.

Boniface Mogunde's unexpected victory wasn't the only highlight for Kenya. David Macharia furthered Kenya's dominance in the qualifiers.

The promising flyweight contender, Macharia wasted no time dispatching his opponent, Thibaut Justin Ngbandamale of Central Africa.

In a match that was over almost as soon as it began, Macharia floored Ngbandamale in the very first round, securing a swift and decisive victory for his nation.

These surprising results have positioned Kenya as a strong contender in the boxing segment of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The journey, however, is still long. The gold and silver medallists in the respective weight categories will be the ones securing a ticket to Paris.
