Peter Ogwang, the State Minister of Sports, has pledged his support towards the project, which is estimated to cost UGX 15 billion.
The dream of Samuel ‘Don King’ Lukanga, the founder of Lukanga Boxing Club, to build a state-of-the-art training center has received a boost.
Peter Ogwang, the State Minister of Sports, has pledged his support towards the project, which is estimated to cost UGX 15 billion.
During Lukanga at 30 celebrations held at the MTN Arena to mark Lukanga's 30 years of non-stop investing in boxing, Ogwang confirmed that he will engage the government and different stakeholders to fund the facility.
In his speech as the guest of honour, he announced that he was contributing UGX 10 million on behalf of Mama Janet Museveni, the Minister for Education and Sports, and pledging another UGX 10 million from the National Council of Sports towards the project.
“I’m contributing sh10m on behalf of my boss Mama Janet Museveni, the Minister for Education and Sports,” Ogwang stated
“I’m also pledging another sh10m from the National Council of Sports (NCS) towards the project,”
"I’m going back to the proposed project that I will discuss with Mama Janet and other stakeholders. We shall see how the government can support Mr. Lukanga,” he added.
The two-acre seater will be constructed in the Kyengera-Nabaazizza zone along the Masaka highway. Lukanga couldn’t hide his joy as he exclaimed.
“This is one of those historical days in my life. I commend the people behind this event. My dream has always been to construct a state of art boxing training centre. I’m grateful this journey has started.”
Moses Muhangi, the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president, contributed UGX five million and pledged to entice his executive to contribute more.
The vocal boxing president requested the minister to lift the current boxing ban in schools and to get solutions on why Uganda is continuously missing international boxing events.
Ogwang also addressed Muhangi's concerns, vowing to engage stakeholders to ensure boxing returns to schools.
The minister plans to have a holistic discussion with stakeholders about how boxing can return to schools, focusing on safety gears and medical teams to ensure a safe boxing environment in schools.
Additionally, Ogwang hinted at the government's plan to build a 15,000-seater stadium at Lugogo. He pledged to direct the National Council of Sports to give back to boxing and sort the funding problem as soon as possible to ensure UBF gets its due.
