Paris 2024: Nigerian boxers arrive France, set to break 28-year jinx

The two boxers set sight to break 28 years of no medal for Nigeria in boxing event.

Nigeria’s Olympic boxing team, Cynthia Ogunsemilore and Adams Olaore, have arrived in Paris for the 2024 edition of the games.

Cynthia will compete in the Women’s Lightweight 60kg and Adams in the Men’s Heavyweight 92kg.

The Paris 2024 is an international multi-sport event set for 26 July to 11 August 2024 in France.

Nigeria last won a medal in the boxing event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where Donkan Dokiwari secured bronze in the super heavyweight category.

Meanwhile, Dolapo Omole was sidelined by injury as the 57kg fighter was unable to pursue his Olympic dream due to an injury he sustained during preparations.

Omole Dolapo’s coach, Adura Olalehin, confirmed the two-time African Featherweight champion is officially out of the Paris Olympics.

“Due to a medical issue, Dolapo is not going to Paris,” Olalehin told AFBC Communications.

Nigeria aim for medals in Table Tennis

Meanwhile, African Table Tennis star Quadri Aruna will lead Nigeria's team at the Olympics in Paris, where the draws will be held on July 24, for the event.

The 35-year-old earned a prestigious seeding in the men's singles event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, according to the International Table Tennis Federation.

The world number 19 will start his campaign in the second round as the 14th seed.

He has competed in three Olympics, and Paris will be his fourth appearance at the showpiece. He featured in the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2016 Summer Olympics, and 2020 Summer Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals in 2016.

Quadri Aruna will be joined by compatriots Fatimo Bello, Edem Offiong, and Olajide Omotayo to fight for medals in the Ping-Pong events.
