Uganda's national boxing team, the Bombers, are brimming with confidence ahead of the 2023 Africa Elite Men and Women boxing Championships, due July 25 -to August 6 in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The national team consisting of eleven male boxers and six women pugilists, held a public workout at their flagging-off ceremony in Kawempe, a Kampala suburb, before the national flag was handed over to them.
"We are going to achieve more this time round, given that everyone has showcased class while in the training camp," Bombers captain Joshua Tukamuhebwa asserted.
"We are four experienced boxers on the team, and we have shared with the rest what they need to take care of," he added.
The women's captain Emilly Nakalema also added that they received sufficient training to bring results.
"We have done the best training, and I hope we shall return with medals," she said, adding, "I am thrilled to be part of the team."
Bombers coach Twaibu Mayanja further noted that they had polished the pugilists for the championships.
"We had a perfect training camp, and we believe they are ready to give their best in Cameroon and make us proud," he said.
Uganda Boxing Federation president Moses Muhangi noted that he is confident the team will return home with medals.
"Uganda Bombers will perform well since we have been winning, but in future, if we get good preparations before the tournament, we shall even perform better," he said.
"This is the first media workout we have ever conducted for the Uganda Bombers so that people can get to know them. I am optimistic that they will perform well in the championships given their preparation."
