Uganda’s professional boxer in the United States of America, Sulaiman Segawa, has won the WBC United States National Boxing Council Featherweight title.
A hot property in the featherweight ranks, Segawa stopped Misael Lopez in the third minute of the tenth and final round for the WBC United States National Boxing Council featherweight title in the Washington, DC-based pro boxing series at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of The Republic of Uganda to Washington D.C Robie Kakonge, who was in attendance at the bout, Sunday, described the victory as a proud moment.
“Ugandan USA-based boxer Sulaiman Segawa wins against Lopez in BeltwayBattle4. Truly honoured and proud to witness this championship alongside #TeamSula”, she tweeted.
Who is Sulaiman Segawa?
A promising prospect for Ugandan boxing, Segawa was one of the boxers who went AWOL in the Netherlands ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics Games qualifiers in Azerbaijan.
The boxers, five in number, were on a self-funded trip under the care of former Uganda national boxer Andaman Daku based in the Netherlands.
However, they needed more funds and frantically appealed for support to no avail.
Cash-strapped, the boxers need funds for a connecting flight and accommodation in Baku and hence, in desperate times, call for desperate measures.
Long story short, Segawa boasts a (14-1, 4 KOs) record, the 2019 National Boxing Association Intercontinental Champion title and the 2023 Featherweight belt.
He resides in Maryland, USA and is an active boxer hailed by fans for his blazing hand speed, devastating punching power and superior ring IQ.
