Nigeria is hoping to pick the sole ticket to the Under 19 Women’s World Cup, scheduled for Malaysia in 2025.

The Nigeria U-19 Women stunned favourites Zimbabwe with a hard-fought one-wicket victory on Monday at the World Cup qualifiers in Kigali.

Led by Piety Lucky, the team had previously defeated Tanzania in their opening match, thanks to Lillian Ude's outstanding performance, where she took five wickets in three overs and was named Player of the Match.

Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat leaving Nigeria to run rings around their batters with impressive bowling numbers.

Peace Usen led the charge for Nigeria, taking three wickets for just sixteen runs in four overs, setting a daunting tone for Zimbabwe.

Lillian Ude followed with another impressive performance, claiming three wickets to elevate her tournament total to eight.

Anointed Akhigbe capped off the innings with a final trifecta, leaving Zimbabwe all out for 77 runs in 19.4 overs.

Only Omosigho Eguakun and Peculiar Agboya managed a double-digit score (15 and 13 runs respectively), and most batters froze under the experienced bowling prowess of the opponents.

Christina Mutasa, Beloved Biza, and Runyararo Pasipanody took two wickets each. Olinder Chare and Kelis Ndholvu took one each to leave the Nigeria Women, fairy tale inning in jeopardy of defeat with one run to go on the last ball.

However, it was Peace Usen’s solo run on the last ball that sealed the victory for Nigeria at 78/9 (20 overs).

Nigeria's victory places them at the top of Group B with two wins, while Zimbabwe and Tanzania, who earlier defeated Malawi, are second and third with one win each.

Nigeria's next opponent, Malawi, is at the bottom of the table. Nigeria and Malawi will face off on Wednesday, September 25th.

In Group A Uganda and Rwanda have won their first two matches to occupy the top two spots with Uganda leading on Net Run Rate. Namibia and Kenya are third and fourth after losing their opening two matches.

The top two teams from each group, after the third match, head for the semi-finals and continue the chase for the sole ticket to the Under 19 Women’s World Cup, scheduled for Malaysia in 2025.
