Kenyan cricket legend Collins Obuya retires after a 23-year career, celebrated for leading Kenya to the 2003 World Cup semifinals.

Kenyan cricket allrounder and former captain, Collins Obuya, announced his retirement on Saturday, closing a storied 23-year chapter in international cricket.

Obuya, who became a household name after leading Kenya to a historic semifinal spot in the 2003 World Cup, played his final match against Uganda at the African Games, marking the end of an era for Kenyan cricket.

Obuya's career was punctuated by remarkable achievements, none more so than his instrumental role in the 2003 World Cup where he not only captained his country to the semifinals but also showcased his exceptional talent by taking 13 wickets, including a career-best 5 for 24 against Sri Lanka.

His performances on the global stage were not just a source of national pride but also led him to become the first Kenyan cricketer to play for an English county team, signing a one-year contract with Warwickshire.

Reflecting on his decision to retire, Obuya said, "I have decided to retire from the game after 23 years. It's been a big honour playing for Kenya."

At 42, Obuya leaves behind a legacy filled with dedication, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements.

Despite a challenging final match where he was bowled for a duck by Uganda's Cosmas Kyewuta, his overall contribution to the African Games in Ghana, where he scored 184 runs, and his broader career, cannot be overstated.

Throughout his career, Obuya played 104 one-day international matches, scoring 2,044 runs, and taking 35 wickets.

More than his statistics, it was his leadership, both on and off the field, that endeared him to fans and teammates alike.

His decision to step down as captain in 2013 showcased his humility and team-first approach, qualities that have defined his career.

As the cricket world bids farewell to one of Kenya's finest, Collins Obuya's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers in Kenya and beyond.
