Santa Monica's iconic franchise is set for the last edition of it's Norse mythology-based storyline and here's what we know so far.

God of War: Ragnarok is a few short months away from its official release. Ragnarok is the follow-up to 2018's God of War soft reboot and will mark the end of the Norse mythology-based storyline. It is set to launch on November 9 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

A few trailers have emerged in the build-up to the release of what many have described as one of the most iconic titles in video game history.

While fans continue to wait for the return of Kratos and Arteus's next father/son adventure, two of the lead combat designers for the game, Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh, have broken the silence, offering some insight on new combat abilities for the former Spartan in the upcoming chapter.

Revealing to Game Informer, Sheth and Yeh have detailed some of Kratos's new combat techniques, including the ability to infuse both the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos with enhanced elemental properties, although depending on the weapon - ice for the Axe and fire for the Blades.

Fusing both will now activate new Weapon Signature Moves - Frost Awaken for the Axe and Whiplash for the Blades - which will also inflict a higher degree of damage on enemies.

Shields will also play a larger role in God of War: Ragnarok's combat scheme with the introduction of new shield types that would affect how specific shields can be used in battle.

For instance, the Dauntless Shield, are lighter but very good at parrying - flashing red to signal the right moment to parry, while others such as the Stonewall Shield are sturdier and more fit for slower combat, absorbing damage and creating a shockwave that knocks enemies down when enough damage is absorbed.

Sheth and Yeh also gave details about a new enemy type called the Grim, a lizard-like creature that stands on two legs.

Some powerful Grims which have been introduced in the game could pose a huge threat from distance. For example, Cursed variants can generally shoot bile from their mouths.

No other new enemies were revealed, but the game's designers admitted that areas will repopulate with new enemies as the game progresses, so backtracking through an area may reveal some new challenges in Ragnarock.

God of War Ragnarök is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

It will be the ninth installment in the God of War series, the ninth chronologically, and the sequel to 2018's God of War.

Loosely based on Norse mythology, the game will be set in ancient Scandinavia and feature series protagonists Kratos and his teenage son Atreus.

Serving as the finale to the Norse era of the series, the game will cover Ragnarök, a series of events that bring about the end of days, and depicts the deaths of some of the Norse gods, which was foretold to happen in the previous game after Kratos killed the Æsir god Baldur.
