Ex-Manchester United defender believes that although Arsenal winning the league would be great for the league, they will eventually fall short
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has tipped his former club to climb above current league leaders Arsenal by the end of the Premier League, while also suggesting that Manchester United would not win the league.
Neville would prefer that Arsenal win the league
Speaking after Arsenal’s emphatic 2-0 derby win over Tottenham, Neville said he was impressed by the Gunners and would prefer that they win the league ahead of Manchester City, but followed that up by saying he did not think they would be able to go all the way.
Speaking on his self-titled podcast, Neville said "I'd rather Arsenal win the league than Man City. I think it would be absolutely sensational for the Premier League.
Arsenal are currently eight points clear of their closest rivals, Manchester City, at the top of the Premier League table and nine points clear of both Newcastle and Manchester United, but Neville believes that the Gunners will drop points soon and be replaced at the top of the table by Manchester City.
“They won't win the league. Manchester City will win the league, and I think Man Utd will finish second, and I know that will annoy Arsenal fans!” Neville added.
Neville's prediction about Arsenal is a long shot, but not impossible
Arsenal have only dropped points in three out of 18 league games, and only dropped points in one of their last five matches.
They will need to drop a lot more for Neville’s prediction to pass but the former Premier League winner with Manchester United will be buoyed by the fact that his former club are in incredible form with five league wins in a row and nine consecutive wins in all competitions.
With 20 matches left to play in the Premier League, there is no telling how the table will end up, especially as teams start to deal with injuries, squad depth, and fixture congestion.
However, Arsenal seem to have given themselves enough room for some faltering with their best-ever start to a Premier League season and will need to have a collapse of epic proportions not to win the league or finish above Manchester United.
