Before the start of the 2023 NPFL season, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau had warned that 'it would no longer be 'business as usual' for match commissioners and referees.
Following questionable calls made in the two 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matches, three match officials have been suspended by the referees’ committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
It becomes the first of its kind this season, after the NFF president, Ibrahim Gusau warned at the beginning of the season that 'it would no longer be 'business as usual' for match commissioners and referees.
On Tuesday, three match officials were suspended following their performances in two games.
Two officials from Shooting Stars vs Kwara United suspended
Ndubuisi Ukah, a centre referee and Otuwho Morrison, an assistant referee were suspended for their poor handling of the game week two encounter between Shooting Stars and Kwara United at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Both the hosts and the visitors were forced to share the spoils at full-time with no goals record, making the goalless game their second draws of the season.
Centre referee for Rivers United vs Niger Tornadoes suspended
Similarly, Faro Abdulrahman was suspended for his performance in Tuesday’s game week three encounter between defending champions, Rivers United and Niger Tornadoes at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The fixture saw Abdulrahman disallow a goal scored by the visitors in the first half, and also award a questionable penalty.
Goals from Enyinnaya Kazie and Ebube Duru helped Rivers United to a 2-1 victory over Niger Tornadoes, with the visitors' goal in the game, coming off a penalty converted by Waheed Adebayo.
The three officials have been mandated to appear before the referee’s committee for an explanation on what happened in the matches.
