Ajax have fired Alfred Schreuder after going seven Eredivisie games without a win.
Ajax have officially sacked Alfred Schreuder as head coach of the club.
The former Club Brugge coach was brought in as a replacement for Erik ten Hag following his move to Manchester United at the end of last season.
Although, Schreuder seemed well positioned for the role having won his first six league games and thrashing Rangers 4-0 in Ajax's first Champions League game of the season.
But, the defending Dutch champions were eventually eliminated from the Champions League group stage and also saw their form dip drastically in the Eredivisie, having not won a league game since October.
Ajax decide to sack Alfred Schreuder
Following Thursday's 1-1 home draw with strugglers Volendam, Ajax have now dismissed head coach Alfred Schreuder after the club failed to win any of their past seven games in the Eredivisie (D6 L1), leaving them fifth in the table, seven points behind current leaders Feyenoord.
It is Ajax's joint-longest winless run in Eredivisie history (also seven in 1962, 1964 and 1965).
A statement from the Dutch giants on Friday read: "The many points lost and the team's lack of development are the main reasons for this decision.
"The club management no longer has confidence in further cooperation."
Ajax also confirmed that assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach had also been dismissed.
The club's chief executive Edwin van der Sar added: "It is a painful decision, but also a necessary one.
"After a good start to the season, we then lost an unnecessary number of points... In recent weeks it became increasingly clear that [Schreuder] could not turn the tide, while we believe that despite the many transfers he had a strong and championship worthy squad at his disposal.
"We have also lost a lot of points in recent weeks and unfortunately we did not see any progress."
Calvin Bassey to get new coach at Ajax
Super Eagles of Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey is now set to welcome a new coach in Amsterdam after the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder.
The 50-year-old Dutchman was previously head coach of Club Brugge in 2022 before leaving to replace Erik ten Hag at Ajax following the latter’s appointment at Manchester United.
Before then, Schreuder also previously served as an assistant coach at Barcelona under Ronaldo Koeman between 2020 and 2021.
Basey joined Ajax in the summer of 2022 and has endured a mixed start to life in Netherlands, although, the 23-year-old Nigeria international has been decent since his arrival, scoring a goal and creating two assists having starting nearly every single game in the Eredivisie under former boss Schreuder.
Bassey is expected to return to action for Ajax as they travel to face Excelsior on Sunday, January 29, in the Eredivisie with a view to helping his side improve their underwhelming position on the summit.
