The Manchester United forward released a statement after he was cleared of all charges
Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has spoken for the first time since being cleared of criminal charges against him.
Greenwood had been under investigation for alleged attempted rape, sexual assault, and coercive control charges that caused him to be arrested in January 2022.
Greenwood cleared of all charges
The 21-year-old striker was cleared of all charges on February 2, 2023, after The Crown Prosecution were unwilling to pursue the case further following the withdrawal of key witnesses and the materialisation of new evidence, which made recording a guilty verdict in the trial almost impossible.
In a statement released on Greenwood’s behalf, the young Premier League star said he was relieved that the case was over and thanked his close circle of supporters.
He said, "I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time."
Can Greenwood play for Manchester United again?
Despite being cleared of all charges by The Crown Prosecution Service, Greenwood cannot take to the field just yet, as Manchester also released a statement earlier declaring that the club would also “conduct its own process before determining next steps.”
Until Manchester United finish their internal processes, Greenwood will remain suspended by the club, although he will continue to collect his £75,000-a-week wages as he has done throughout his suspension.
Greenwood still has a contract with Manchester United until 2025, but it is also uncertain if he will be allowed to continue on that contract after the club’s internal processes.
Before the suspension, Greenwood had played in 129 matches for Manchester United, scoring 36 goals, but it is uncertain at this point if he will be able to add to either of those tallies.
