A pitch invader ran straight to Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic at the end of the Europa League game between PSV and Sevilla, but was pinned down in MMA style by the goalkeeper.
There were unpleasant scenes at the end of the Europa League game between PSV and Sevilla, as a fan ran on to the pitch to attack the visiting goalkeeper, Marko Dmitrovic.
How it happened
After losing the first leg 3-0, PSV had a huge deficit to overcome in the second leg of their Europa League playoff with Sevilla.
Late goals from Luuk de Jong and Fabio Silva gave the Eredivisie side some hope, but they ultimately fell short at the end.
However, a nasty incident happened towards the end of the game, as a fan ran on to the pitch to attack Sevilla goalkeeper Dmitrovic.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper was on alert, as he overpowered the invader with some good wrestling skills until the stewards arrived to take the invader away.
Dmitrovic’s account of the incident
Dmitrovic was not expected to start for Sevilla, but he was a late addition after first-choice goalkeeper Yassine Bounou fell ill before the game.
Giving an account of the incident after the match, the Serbian expressed his unhappiness over the incident.
"He came and pushed me from behind. He was probably angry about the result. He tried to hit me, and I managed to grab him and wait for security to arrive," he said.
"I'm not going to say what I really wanted to do [to the pitch invader]. I'm glad I was aware of where he was coming from and was able to stop him; otherwise, other things could have happened. He wanted to hit me. It is unfortunate that this kind of incident happened on a football pitch. UEFA should do something; this has to stop."
Dmitrovic survived the attack unharmed, as his team advanced to the next round of the competition.
Sevilla through to the next round
Despite the 2-0 loss, Sevilla advanced to the Europa League round of 16 following their first-leg advantage. The Spanish team will find out who their opponents are in the draws on Friday.
