The Nigerian defender is finally settling in at Ajax after a couple of inconsistent performances in the first half of the season.
Super Eagles star Calvin Bassey has hinted that he prefers playing as a centre-back as opposed to a left-back after putting in a man-of-the-match display for Ajax in their 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen.
Bassey arrived at Ajax from Rangers for €23.00m last summer but had an inconsistent start to life in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Bassey's slow start
The Super Eagles star drew criticism from past Dutch internationals, who questioned Ajax’s decision to spend that amount on him.
His inconsistent displays led to his drop from Ajax’s starting eleven for a few games. However, Bassey has since regained his place, and he seems to have found a new confidence.
Bassey's new found confidence
The 23-year-old put in a brilliant performance for the Dutch champions in their 1-0 win over Nijmegen on Sunday.
Following the match, which saw Bassey earn the man-of-the-match award, the Super Eagles star hinted that the reason for his recent display is down to his role in the starting lineup.
Bassey played as a centre-back in the clash, and it appears he loves playing there, even though he also plays as a left-back, having started his career in that position.
“I can play in both positions. Maybe I prefer the centre, but I just want to play. Where I stand is the last thing on my mind. I just want to be on the field and give 110 per cent,” Bassey told Soccernews.
Bassey added that he still has a lot to offer to the team, but there are also many things he can learn at Ajax.
“I bring power to the team and speed at the back. Ajax can also give me a lot in better understanding the spaces and the game. I came here to grow and because it is one of the best places for young players to develop,” he added.
Bassey has made 33 appearances in all competitions for Ajax this season, scoring one goal and recording five assists. a
