Chelsea overturn first-leg disappointment with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals.
Chelsea are through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.
The Blues had to overcome a 1-0 defeat in the first leg to come back and win the tie thanks to a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge to advance to the next round.
Raheem Sterling's thumping first-half strike was followed by Kai Havertz's penalty in the second half to secure the comeback victory and knock out Dortmund in the process.
Sterling put Chelsea in front against Borussia Dortmund
Chelsea started the game brightly as Raheem Sterling was presented with a big chance in the second minute but the English winger failed to even get a shot away as the Dortmund goalkeeper closed in.
The home side were presented with another chance in the sixth minute but Joao Felix could not find the back of the net, denied once again by Meier in the Dortmund goal.
Dortmund struck back with their first real chance but Marco Reus' goal-bound shot from a direct free-kick was saved by Kepa Arizabalaga in the 17th minute.
Chelsea continued to create chances but lacked the cutting edge to convert as usual which was evident when Havertz hit the bar from point-blank range in the 28th minute.
The German would have the ball in the back of the net brilliantly 10 minutes later but it was ruled out for offside by Raheem Sterling in the build-up.
Chelsea would score again in the 43rd minute and this time it counted as Raheem Sterling lashed home a superb finish to complete a brilliant team move involving Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell.
The goal put Chelsea in front on the night and levelled the tie at 1-1 on aggregate to send Stamford Bridge rocking and restore their hopes of qualification.
Havertz wins the tie for Chelsea against Borussia Dortmund
Chelsea began the second half with the same intensity with which they ended the first and immediately got rewarded for their endeavour after just one minute.
Marius Wolf inadvertently blocked Chilwell's cross with his hand and upon VAR intervention which included watching the pitchside monitor, centre referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot.
When the dust finally settle almost five minutes later, Havertz stepped up to take the penalty and sent Alexander Meier the wrong way but hit the foot of the bar for the second time on the night.
Lucky for the German international, VAR intervened and called encroachment against multiple Dortmund players which led to a controversial penalty retake.
Havertz stepped up again and repeated the first penalty, only this time he found the inside the net and not the woodwork to put Chelsea up on the night and in the tie after 53 minutes of play.
Dortmund were presented with a golden opportunity to level the tie with a goal but Jude Bellingham missed their best chance of the game in the 58th minute, side-footing a show wide from close range.
Dortmund created more chances as Wolf forced Kepa into a stunning save and Sule shot wide from the edge of the box but Chelsea did just about enough to hold on for the win and secure qualification to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
