Osimhen says he is still not an icon in Naples despite his brilliant performances for Napoli this season.
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has thanked Napoli fans for their love and support, but the Nigeria international insists he is not a club icon yet.
Osimhen revealed this while accepting the award for the 2022 best foreign athlete in Italy, given by the foreign press in Italy.
Osimhen's rollercoaster first two years at Napoli
The Super Eagles star has been a club favourite ever since he arrived at the club from Lille for a club-record fee of €75.00m in 2020.
Osimhen had a mixed start to life in Naples in his first two seasons at the club, but he has always received the love and support of the fans every time.
The Nigeria international missed three months of action in his first year, although he scored ten league goals in 24 matches.
Osimhen scored 18 goals in all competitions in his second season, including the 14 in the league, but he also missed two months of action due to injury.
Nonetheless, he continued to enjoy the support and love of Napoli fans, and he has finally repaid them this season.
Osimhen's best season yet at Napoli
Osimhen is currently having his best individual season yet after scoring 19 league goals in 22 games and two goals in four Champions League matches.
His performances this season have raised the support and love Napoli fans have for him, but the ex-Lille star insists, it is his job to put a smile on their faces.
“As a football player, when you are in Napoli, you fall in love more with football because I think they probably based their whole life on the game and the support for their team and also the city,” Osimhen said while receiving his award for the 2022 best foreign athlete in Italy.
“So to be able to try to give something to remember is a big mission for me. I really want to put smiles on their faces because of the love they have shown me since I came here in 2020, it has been overwhelming.
“So for me to repay them, I have to give my all on the pitch and make sure I make them very happy alongside my teammates.
Osimhen says he is not a Napoli icon yet
But despite the heroic treatment he receives from Napoli fans, Osimhen insists he is not an icon yet until he helps Napoli achieve their objective, which is to win titles.
“Of course, we’ve been doing quite well this season. It’s been very good,” Osimhen continued.
“The fans are amazing. The staff, everyone, the president.
“I just want to say I don’t consider myself as an icon yet until I achieve the objective the club has set for itself this season this season,” Osimhen concluded.
Osimhen is on course to achieve the iconic status, though, as Napoli are on course to win their first league title since 1990.
