Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti blames VAR for El Clasico defeat
Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti has blamed the intervention of the VAR for his side’s El Clasico loss to Barcelona.
Real Madrid lose three consecutive clasicos
Real Madrid lost to Barcelona for the third time in a row this season after Franck Kessie’s 92nd-minute winner broke Los Blancos' hearts.
Real Madrid had been ahead for a large part of the game after taking a 9th-minute lead thanks to Ronald Araujo’s own goal, but they were pegged behind thanks to two goals at the end of each half.
Before Kessie’s winner at the end of the second half, Real Madrid thought they had gone ahead thanks to a Marco Asensio goal in the 83rd minute, but the goal was ruled offside by a small margin, and Ancelotti bemoaned the decision, saying it left him with doubts.
Ancelotti blames VAR for Barcelona defeat
Speaking after the game, Ancelotti said his team played well, but had not won the game because of a dubious referring call.
He told Marca, “We played a complete game from the first minute to the last. We haven’t won, because there was an offside that we still have doubts about.
“We go back to Madrid with doubts in our minds.”
Real Madrid’s loss to Barcelona opened a 12-point gap at the top of the LaLiga table which practically rules Los Blancos out of contention for the title.
With a tough draw in the UEFA Champions League and a 1-0 deficit in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey, Real Madrid’s prospects of winning a title this season appear bleak.
Ancelotti’s job is on the line as a result and he will have to come up with a remarkable end to the season not to get cast out by Florentino Perez.
