Frank Lampard has called on his Chelsea players to show more aggression after yet another Premier League defeat, this time at the hands of Wolves.
Chelsea put up another disappointing display, losing to a Wolves side that totally earned their win by fighting for every loose ball and showing much more intent.
No 'new-manager bounce' for Lampard and Chelsea
The Blues struggled to cope and even the interim appointment of Frank Lampard seemed to have no immediate effect.
The defeat leaves Chelsea in 11th place, currently averaging less than a goal a game, with Real Madrid on the horizon in the Champions League in midweek.
Lampard gave an honest assessment of the game and pointed to the lack of aggression and physical superiority as some of the reasons for the defeat.
“Without that [aggression] you can’t win games and you can’t be the team that Chelsea has been at different times and want to get back to,” Lampard said.
He added: “I think it was a performance, if you really analyse it, if you want to win a Premier League game, you have to have more aggression, more speed, win more competitive duels.
"That baseline stuff, against a team fighting for their Premier League lives, will always dictate the turning of the result of the game, regardless of the talent on each side.”
Wolves spoil Lampard's return party as Chelsea lose again
Big picture for Chelsea
Chelsea are currently 11th in the Premier League and their only route into the Champions League next season is to win the competition this year.
They face Spanish giants, Real Madrid in a tantalising doubleheader, with the first leg taking place on Wednesday and the Blues have a lot of work to do in order to avoid a harrowing defeat.
