Chelsea's American co-owner Todd Boehly tried to lift the confidence of the players in the dressing room after Saturday's Premier League defeat to Brighton.

After the disappointing 2-1 loss to Brighton, Chelsea co-owner, Todd Boehly delivered a speech to the players before Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid during which he described the club’s season as “embarrassing”.

According to the Daily Mail, Boehly was joined by his fellow board members, Behdad Eghbali and Hansjorg Wyss, as he addressed the squad.

He made it clear that the hierarchy expected far better after spending close to £600m on signings since buying the club last summer.

Chelsea have spent big on the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Wesley Fofana but there has been very little improvement with the team finding themselves 35 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Boehly expressed his displeasure with the team's form, but his overall goal was to motivate the players before the biggest game of the season.

As Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League and at risk of missing out on Europe, he said the Madrid match represented a chance for them to salvage their season.

More on Chelsea

Meanwhile, Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard has said he is absolutely fine with Todd Boehly coming in for a chat with the players.

Lampard believes the 49-year-old businessman is only protecting his investment, and his constant presence only shows that he wants the best for the team.
