Ogenyi Onazi is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Turkish East Riffa Club in the Bahrain top flight and the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Ogenyi Onazi was born on December 25, 1995, in Jos, Nigeria. Onazi, who stands at 5ft 8in, currently plays for East Riffa Club in the Bahrain first division.

Nigeria’s Onazi started his playing career and football journey back in the Nigerian city of Jos, where he was born and caught attention with his skill. 

He would move to the nation’s financial capital, Lagos State where he joined My People before putting pen to paper with NPFL side El Kanemi Warriors.

He spent just a season with the Warriors in the NPFL before Europe came beckoning. 

Onazi joined Italian and Serie A giants SS Lazio after impressing for Nigeria at the U-20 in the build-up to the FIFA World Cup in 2011. 

He penned a four-year contract with the Sky Blues but had to come through the ranks before he made his senior debut for the club against Atalanta. 

Onazi netted his first goal four goals for the club on March 7, 2013, in the Europa League before he committed his future to the club for a further two years after an impressive start to life at the club.

He made over 70 appearances for Lazio, scoring four goals for the Italians. 

In 2016, Onazi ended his romance with Lazio when he joined Turkish side Trabzonspor in a deal worth over three million euros.

Onazi spent four years at Tranzonspor, making 69 appearances in all competitions before he was allowed to leave on a free transfer. 

He will remain in the Turkish Super Lig as he was snapped up by Denizlispor on a free transfer, putting pen to paper on an initial six-month deal. 

Onazi had two spells with Denizlispor, first in 2020 and then in 2021, playing a total of 20 matches. 

He also had spells at the Norwegian side SonderjyskE and Zalgiris, both as a free agent.

Ogenyi Onazi Super Eagles career

Onazi is quite an accomplished international player for his country Nigeria. 

He played for the Nigerian Under-18, known as the Golden Eaglets, playing in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009. He also featured for the U-20s, the Flying Eagles, but was not a part of the team that represented Nigeria at the U-20 FIFA World Cup back in 2011.

For the Senior national team, the Super Eagles, Onazi made his debut for the team during the 3-1 win over Venezuela in a friendly back in 2012. 

He went on to be a part of the Super Eagles team under the managerial guidance of the late Steven Keshi that made their way to the 2013 AFCON title. 

He also represented Nigeria in the 2013 FIFA Confederation Cup in Brazil before impressing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup where the Nigeria Super Eagles reached the round of 16 before they were knocked out by European giant France.

In total, Onazi won 52 caps for Nigeria and has a single goal to his name. He is yet to officially announce his retirement from international football.

Onazi was one of Nigeria’s better performers at the tournament where he got injured during the round of 16 clash against France. 

The midfielder was also spotted training with NPFL side Remo Stars earlier this year at their Ikenne training ground. 

In one of the tweets on Tuesday evening, the NPFL club wrote: "Training day but can you sight a guest on our turf??"
