101st minute equaliser saves Super Eagles AFCON 2023 stars from relegation in Portugal on the last day

The Super Eagles players and their Portuguese were saved by the last kick of the season in the Primeira Liga.

Super Eagles defenders to the AFCON 2023 Bruno Onyemaechi and Chidozie Awaziem knew their Primeira Liga futures hung in the balance as Boavista took on Vizela in a tense and nerve-wracking afternoon at the Estádio do Bessa in Porto.

After a string of poor results, Boavista needed just a point to secure their top-flight status for another year.

But as the minutes ticked away, it was Vizela who took the lead twice to put the home side on the brink of the unthinkable - relegation.

Bruno and Awaziem, who had both played crucial roles for Boavista throughout the campaign, watched on anxiously from the pitch. Their dreams of continuing their careers in one of Europe's top leagues were fading fast.

But just as all hope seemed lost, the referee pointed to the spot in the 101st minute. A lifeline had been thrown to the beleaguered Boavista side.

As the home fans held their breath, Miguel Reisinho stepped up to take the season-changing and saving penalty.

The weight of the club's future rested squarely on his shoulders. He took a deep breath and fired the ball past the Vizela goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations around the stadium.

The final whistle blew soon after, confirming Boavista's survival. For the Super Eagles duo, it was a moment of pure elation. They had stared down the abyss of relegation and emerged victorious, their top-flight status secured for another season.

Of the duo, Bruno started the encounter and feature for 70 minutes, winning three tackles and hitting the woodwork while Awaziem came on for the final 21 minutes.
