Despite being only 17, the former Manchester City and Arsenal target could be fast-tracked to Newcastle's first team
Eddie Howe believes he has unearthed a new gem at Newcastle United in the form of 17-year-old Nigeria-eligible youngster Trevan Sanusi.
The young forward, who signed from Birmingham City last year, has been turning heads during Newcastle's pre-season tour in Japan and could be set for a run with the first team.
Sanusi impresses with Newcastle in Japan
Sanusi, who is eligible to play for Nigeria despite playing for England’s youth team, showcased his talent in Newcastle's convincing 4-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds in Saitama.
Replacing Harvey Barnes in the 79th minute, Sanusi made an immediate impression with his quick and direct play, leaving Newcastle supporters and Eddie Howe excited about his potential.
Sanusi signed for Newcastle last year despite significant interest from top Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal when he was just 16.
Known for his versatility, Sanusi can play across the front line and has been a standout player for Newcastle's Under-21 team and his performances in pre-season suggest he is ready to make the step up to the first team.
Howe waxes lyrical about teenage sensation
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been vocal about his excitement for Sanusi's future at Newcastle.
Speaking after the match against Urawa Red Diamonds, Howe praised the young forward's talent and potential, saying, "He's definitely got a talent. He's very clever with the ball.
"He's got lots of tricks in his bag that he can pull out from time to time. I'm excited by him. I think he's got the basics of a really good framework to build from."
Howe's confidence in Sanusi's abilities is evident, but he also acknowledges the challenges ahead of the 17-year-old forward, saying, "Certainly, the Premier League's a totally different beast physically, and I think that's something he's going to have to continue to work on. For someone so young, I think he's made a good impression."
Sanusi’s performances in pre-season have set him up to be fast-tracked into the Newcastle first team and as the Magpies prepare for their final pre-season match against Yokohama F. Marinos in Tokyo, Sanusi has the chance to further impress and cement his place in Howe's plans for the upcoming season.
