2026 World Cup: Nigeria wait on FIFA as 3-point deduction looms over South Africa

The Super Eagles face an uphill task to qualify for next year’s World Cup, but things could change before they face South Africa.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are still waiting on FIFA to decide on the punishment that should be handed to South Africa for fielding an ineligible player in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho.

Nigeria hoping for South Africa sanction

The Bafana Bafana are currently in a strong position to qualify for their first World Cup since 2010 as they currently sit five points clear of their nearest challenger, Rwanda, and six clear of the Super Eagles with four games left.

However, despite sitting comfortably at the top, South Africa are still in danger of missing the World Cup as they could get a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.

The 1996 African champions allegedly fielded Teboho Mokoena in their 2-0 win over Lesotho, but the Mamelodi Sundowns star should have missed the game, having picked up two yellow cards in two previous campaigns in the same campaign.

Mokoena received a yellow card in the 45th minute of South Africa’s 2-1 win over Benin on matchday 1 and was also booked in the 52nd minute of the 3-1 win over Zimbabwe on matchday 4.

As a result, the midfielder should have missed the matchday five win over the Crocodiles of Lesotho in March.

However, his appearance in that game broke one of FIFA's rules, which states that if a player receives two cautions in two different matches of the same competition, they will be automatically suspended from the team’s subsequent match.

FIFA silent on Nigeria and South Africa situation

While this situation has gotten the attention of Nigerians, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is still waiting for FIFA to rule on the matter.

The world football governing body is yet to say anything on the situation, but it is expected that a ruling will come before Nigeria take on South Africa in Johanesburg. Should FIFA decide to go ahead with the three-point deduction, the Super Eagles will have their fate back in their hands.
