3 mistakes Arsenal must fix to win the Premier League

Mikel Arteta’s men lost the Premier League title to Manchester City after a bad run in the final ten games last season.

The Gunners topped the table right from the start last season and for 248 days but could not go all the way as they gave title rivals Man City the chance to overtake them.

Arsenal’s downfall started against Liverpool after going two goals up and later being pegged back by the Red with the game ending in a draw.

The same thing occurred against West Ham, while against Southampton, it was a terrible performance. These games led to Arsenal’s collapse in the title race.

Arteta’s team performance last season was one of the best they have ever had but their failure to win the league title was questioned by fans and pundits.

We take a look at some mistakes they must avoid if they are faced with this situation in the new season.

1. Not ruthless enough

There is no Premier League game that is easy to play which is why it is one of the toughest leagues in Europe.

As a football team, you need to be ruthless in front of goal to win games which was one of the issues Arsenal had in their last ten games last season.

The Gunners were unable to kill off games against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton which led to their title collapse.

They went two goals up against Liverpool and West Ham but could only manage a draw at the end of 90 minutes.

There were enough chances to bury the game when needed but could not utilise them as they were pegged back by their opponents.

One of the advantages Man City had over Arsenal was that they make sure they weaken their opponents by scoring enough goals to avoid any comeback.

The Gunners need to work on being ruthless this new season if they are to put themselves in a position of winning the league.

2. Squad depth

One of the mistakes Arsenal made last season was not having quality squad depth in their ranks.

The Gunners' bench was not good enough to match their best eleven from their defence to their attack.

If we look at the Premier League winners Manchester City, we see quality both in their first eleven and also on the bench which gave them more flexibility in their games.

However, the Gunners have dug deep into their transfer chest and brought in quality players to help them push further this season.

Arsenal have signed Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurien Timber this summer and are also close to signing David Raya from Brentford.

Mikel Arteta’s team will be looking to challenge for the league title this season and quality is needed in their squad which will play a major role in their title challenge.

3. Managing player minute

Another issue Arsenal had was not managing their players' game time well enough, making them worn out during the final hurdle last season.

The likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Magalhaes and Aaron Ramsdale all played at least 37 Premier League games last season without any break.

These players gave their all on the pitch but they need to be managed properly to avoid injuries and fatigue.

Many of these players played 90-minute football week in and week out and without enough rest, they can't perform at a top level.

Mikel Arteta needs to ensure that his players' minutes are managed properly to avoid another last-minute title collapse this new season.

This season will be another test for Mikel Arteta and his team who will be considered title challengers but if they are to go all the way, they need to address these mistakes and make the necessary corrections.
