From Ademola Lookman to Calvin Bassey, Super Eagles stars will be in the limelight in the top five European leagues this weekend

As European football heats up this weekend, all eyes will be on a host of Nigerian stars making waves across the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.

From electrifying attackers to rock-solid defenders, these Super Eagles are primed to shine on the biggest stages. Here are five Nigerian players you won’t want to miss as they look to leave their mark and continue their stellar form in some of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Wilfred Ndidi — Leicester vs Bournemouth

After being rated as the best holding midfielder in the Premier League in September, Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi will be hoping to kick off October with a bang when Leicester City take on Bournemouth.

The Foxes star has already provided four assists in six Premier League games, three of which came last month, and he could be in line to add to that number or get his first league goal of the season when Leicester host midtable Bournemouth this weekend.

Calvin Bassey — Manchester City vs Fulham

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has had a mixed start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, but appears to be getting back to his best after helping Fulham to a clean sheet against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Bassey and Fulham will be up against their biggest test so far this season when they host reigning champions Manchester City, with the Nigerian defender given the unenviable task of keeping Cityzens’ star Erling Haaland quiet for 90 minutes.

Ademola Lookman — Atalanta vs Genoa

Ballon d’Or nominee Ademola Lookman starred for Atalanta in their midweek Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, registering a goal and assist as La Dea secured a 3-0 away win.

The Nigerian star could find the back of the net in consecutive games for the first time this season when Atalanta host 17th-place Genoa in Serie A this weekend. With Genoa failing to find a win in four of their last five games, Atalanta are expected to run riot against I Rossoblu, with Lookman leading the line.

Victor Boniface — Bayer Leverkusen vs Holstein Kiel

Another Nigerian who was impressive during the midweek European action, Victor Boniface, who has backed himself to win the CAF Player of the Year award, scored Bayer Leverkuse’s winner against AC Milan and is set to continue his superb goalscoring form this weekend.

Boniface has already scored three goals in four Bundesliga starts and could bolster his chances of winning the CAF Player of the Year with more goals against Holstein Kiel, who are bottom of the Bundesliga after conceding 17 goals in five games this season.

Moses Simon — Lyon vs Nantes

Nigerian winger Moses Simon faces a stern test against a resurgent Lyon, who have won all of their last three games after a disastrous start to the season.

With Lyon in such great form, Simon will be up against it, but having already registered two goals and two assists in six matches, Nantes can bank on the Super Eagles forward to create danger against the former Ligue 1 champions.

Having been linked with a move to Lyon in the summer, Simon also has a point to prove to the club that missed out on signing him, adding to his motivation this weekend.
