The Red Devils have recorded their first loss of the new Premier League season after only two matches of the new season
Manchester United were rocked by a 95th-minute winner in their second Premier League match of the season as Brazilian forward Joao Pedro broke Red Devils’ hearts in a 2-1 loss to Brighton.
Former Red Devil Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Brighton just after the half-hour mark, but Manchester United pulled level thanks to a goal from Ivorian forward Amad Diallo.
However, after having a potential late winner from Alejandro Garnancho ruled out thanks to Joshua Zirkzee’s absentmindedness, Manchester United suffered late heartbreak as Joao Pedro struck in the 95th minute to give Brighton a 2-1 win.
How it happened
Manchester United had a golden opportunity to take the lead after just 10 minutes when Diogo Dalot found Amad free at the back post, but the Ivorian youngster completely misfired from close-range.
Manchester United paid the price for that missed chance in the 32nd minute when ex-Red Devil striker Danny Welbeck slid in to make it 1-0 to Brighton.
The goal was Welbeck’s sixth against Manchester United and the 100th of his club career.
Manchester United thought they had found an immediate leveller when Marcus Rashford bundled the ball into the net from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the Red Devils 1-0 behind going into halftime.
Following the half-time break, Amad redeemed himself for his earlier miss by scoring with a deflected shot to pull Manchester United back level at 1-1.
With 15 minutes of the match left, United should have gone ahead when substitute Alejandro Garnacho tapped the ball into an open net, only for the goal to be disallowed in dramatic fashion because summer signing Zirkzee, who was in an offside position, tried to make the goal his own and touched the ball before it entered the goal.
That missed chance proved decisive when, in the 95th minute, Brighton kept the pressure on from a corner, and Joao Pedro headed in a back post cross for a stunning winner, keeping the Seagulls top of the Premier League table.
