AC Milan failed to catch up on rivals with draw at San Siro against Cagliari.

Milan were riding high on the Super Cup triumph in Saudi Arabia where they beat Neighbours Inter, however, they failed to carry that form back into the league, as they were held to draw by Inter.

New manager Sergio Conceicao was thrust into the deep end, but managed to overcome, with victories over Juventus and Milan in the Super Cup. However, he could not lead his team to victory in his first league test against a lesser side.

key match details

AC Milan dominated proceedings from the outset, but Cagliari's resilience ensured the hosts were made to work tirelessly for their chances. Nicolas Viola's audacious overhead kick set the tone for the visitors, who continued to frustrate Milan's attacking endeavours.

Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez both tested the mettle of Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile, who produced a string of impressive saves to keep the scores level.

As the half drew to a close, Mattia Felici's wicked strike forced Mike Maignan into a spectacular diving save, as Cagliari continued to defy the odds, against the new Italian Super Cup champions.

The second half commenced with Pulisic rattling the crossbar with a thunderous effort from distance. Ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata then spurned a gilt-edged opportunity but redeemed himself by slotting into an empty net after another former Blues’ Pulisic's volley had rebounded off the post.

Cagliari responded promptly, with Nadir Zortea's low shot catching Maignan off guard and slipping beneath his body. Undeterred, Milan resumed their assault, only to be repeatedly denied by Caprile's heroics.

As the match entered its dying embers, Hernandez's fizzing free kick was miraculously tipped over by Caprile, ensuring the visitors secured a hard-fought point.
