The Nigerian winger, brought in from Villarreal last season, has failed to meet expectations, with Milan suffering for his inconsistencies and languishing in eighth place after 15 games this campaign.
Chukwueze’s impact falls short of expectations
Chukwueze arrived at AC Milan amid high hopes following an impressive stint at Villarreal, where he tallied 37 goals and 31 assists in 207 appearances.
His explosive pace and creativity were seen as the perfect addition to Milan’s attack. However, the 25-year-old has struggled to adapt, with inconsistent performances marking his Serie A debut season.
Milan’s attacking woes have continued, with the club boasting the lowest goal tally among Italy’s traditional top sides.
With one goal and zero assists in 15 Serie A games this season, Chukwueze has struggled to make an impact on AC Milan’s fortunes, save for his performances in the Coppa Italia.
Capello highlights Chukwueze’s struggles
Capello, who led Milan to Champions League glory in 1994, spoke about Chukwueze’s struggles as emblematic of the team’s broader issues.
“I think that a tall attacking winger capable of making the difference was essential,” Capello explained, adding, “In the past, Milan has always pushed more to the left, and it would have been useful to balance with a similar player on the right.
“Unfortunately, Chukwueze has never really clicked, and there is no alternative with similar characteristics.”
Chukwueze’s underwhelming displays have fuelled speculation about his future, with reports suggesting he could leave as early as the January transfer window.
