“I lived with my mom and my sister. Growing up with them allowed me to understand women,” Lookman said according to a post on X via lequipe.
His father and another sister remained in Lagos, Nigeria, but his mother ensured that the distance did not impact his upbringing.
“My mother did everything to not let it affect me. I was the only boy; my family showed me a lot of love, always supported and protected,” he added.
Lookman emphasised the challenges he faced without a father figure present during his childhood.
“As a child, if you don't have a father around or a mother, it's complicated. My mother created the best possible environment for my sister and me,” he said.
He praised her versatility, stating, “She played a lot of different roles. I always called her Superwoman because she is an incredible woman. I will always be indebted to her.”
The 26-year-old has risen to prominence in European football, currently playing for Atalanta in Serie A after successful stints at clubs like Charlton Athletic, Everton, and RB Leipzig.
His journey has been marked by perseverance through adversity, which he attributes largely to his mother's influence.
“Those torments of hers awakened that extra fire in me and gave me fuel. That urge, that feeling that I could, it was love. I’m thankful for all those adversities. They made me who I am today,” Lookman reflected.
Despite a slow start, the talented forward has risen to become a key player for his current club, Atalanta, and national team, the Super Eagles, playing decisive roles in their respective run to the Europa League title and AFCON final in the last 12 months.
As he continues to shine on the international stage with the Super Eagles, Lookman's story serves as an inspiring testament to the power of family support in overcoming life's challenges and achieving one's dreams in football.
