The in-form Ademola Lookman scores his 12th league goal of the season in Atalanta's 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Sampdoria.
The in-form Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, scored from a brilliant solo run in the second-half to seal a 2-0 win for Atalanta against Sampdoria.
Sampdoria, the away side, undaunted by the home crowd in the Gewiss Stadium, started the game on the front foot, but they did not manage to get the ball over the line.
The home side punished them a few minutes from half-time when Joakim Maehle connected to a Hans Hateboer delivery in the 42nd minute. La Dea would double their advantage in the 57th minute of the game when a solo run from Ademola Lookman ended with the ball at the back of the net.
The win takes Atalanta into the top four, only two points behind Inter Milan in second place. Sampdoria, on the other hand, continue to dwell in the relegation places, eight points away from safety.
Lookman scores again
Atalanta went ahead in the first-half when Maehle headed in Hateboer’s cross from close range. The game's second goal, on the other hand, was unlike its much simpler predecessor, which featured equal contributions from the goalscorer and the assist maker; Lookman's goal was magical.
Typical of a player in the type of form Lookman is in, Lookman picked up the ball from Rafael Toloi, the assist-maker on record, and weaved his way through nearly two-thirds of the pitch, leaving opposition markers in his wake, before finishing brilliantly into the bottom corner.
The goal is Lookman’s seventh in his last four games in all competitions, and it takes his season tally to 12 goals, making him the second-highest goal scorer in the division, one behind his countryman Victor Osimhen.
Nigerian Capocannoniere race
Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman of the Super Eagles are the highest (13) and second-highest (12) goal scorers in Serie A, making them the most likely candidates at this point for the top scorer award, or Capocannoniere in Italy.
The Napoli striker has the better goal-per-game ratio, but Lookman’s form in a recently high-scoring Atalanta side could see him surpass his countryman.
The form of both strikers is something that has delighted Super Eagles' coach Jose Peseiro, who believes what they are doing is incredible: "It's an exceptional moment for Nigerian footballers and knowing you can count on two strikers like them is something incredible”
Osimhen’s Napoli and Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta would go head-to-head on March 11th.
