This is not the first time that the Belgian tactician has left the team before the end of the season as he has done so in his previous two campaigns.

AFC Leopards assistant coach Tom Juma has maintained that his boss Patrick Aussems is away on medical grounds following his absence on the touchline as Ingwe lost 2-1 to Sofapaka at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.

There had been speculations over the Belgian tactician’s whereabouts following his no show during the match and it later emerged that he had quietly left the country early this week with Ingwe still having two matches to play.

“Coach is back home due to personal reasons, medical reasons,” Juma told the media after Wednesday’s match.

Aussems’ future is the subject of speculation having been rumoured to be among those being monitored by Bandari while it is still not known if he will extend his stay with Ingwe next season even though the club have insisted that he will be around.

The futures of Eugene Mukangula and Peter Thiong’o were also thrown in doubt after they were stripped of the captaincy in the wake of reports of a go-slow within the playing unit but the two were in the starting XI on Wednesday with the former even scoring their consolation goal.

“Eugene is one of our key and influential players and you could see that on the pitch, he scored a good goal maybe should have scored one more,” added Juma.

Juma feels Leopards, who slipped to eighth position and are set for a sixth straight year without a trophy, need to strengthen in all areas for them to challenge for titles next season especially after being hampered by a transfer ban in the last two windows.

“AFC Leopards have not achieved their targets, we are a team that wants to win trophies and when we do not do that, then we have not achieved our targets,” said Juma.

“We have to regroup and recruit, we have been playing the last four seasons with the same players, we lost players and we were not recruiting. We lacked depth, especially towards the end of the season.”

Leopards will play away to Kariobangi Sharks in their final league match of the season on Sunday before facing Ulinzi Stars in the third-place playoff of the FKF Cup next week.
