FOOTBALL AFC Leopards forced to re-strategize with transfer targets proving difficult to acquire

AFC Leopards’ transfer business seems to be experiencing problems with key targets either too expensive or opting against a move, so where do they turn now?

AFC Leopards are back to the drawing board as far as their transfer business is concerned with a number of key targets seemingly out of reach.

Leopards coach Tomas Trucha has made central defence, midfield and attack the priority areas he needs to strengthen in the mid-season transfer window and with that, Ingwe have been linked with a number of players.

"We are targeting two central defenders, a number 8, and a striker. The question of signing these players rests with the management," Trucha told the media after their win over Ulinzi Stars this month.

With that admission, Trucha left the job in the hands of his bosses but even though the window is still open until February 8, it appears like they will leave it late again just like it happened before the start of this season.

So far, only young forwards Mark Shaban and Christopher Koloti from Green Commandos have officially joined AFC Leopards with hopes that Rwandan striker Arthur Gitego will commit to the club.

Gitego has been in Nairobi since arriving last week but while he is still under the noses of Ingwe, there are already reports claiming that Macedonian football giants FC Shkupi are also interested.

The 20-year-old has been shining for Marine FC in the Rwanda Premier League, attracting the interest of a number of teams, and Leopards will better act quickly.

Already, Ingwe’s quest to get in experienced and quality defenders has suffered a setback after key target Michael Kibwage opted to extend his contract with Tusker FC until the end of the season while Posta Rangers captain Ken Owino has a heavy price tag on him.

Posta are believed to have quoted over Ksh10 million for each of Owino and midfielder Brian Musa who is also wanted by Leopards.

It is clear that Posta do not want to lose their captain and his deputy in the middle of what has been a good season, meaning Leopards might have to turn elsewhere or risk spending most of the window in a long-drawn negotiation process.

There were also rumours of a move for experienced former midfielder Humphrey Mieno but he is now a key player for Sofapaka and was recently handed the armband by new coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno which is a sign that they have no desire of losing him.

While Leopards have started showing some signs of life after back-to-back 1-0 wins, Trucha has insisted bis team badly needs reinforcements and with rivals doing their business early, the club might be left with little time which will only lead to panic buys that might not help the course.
