FKFPL AFC Leopards' low fitness levels concern Tom Juma after draw against 10-man Talanta

Leopards had a man advantage but could not find a way to break FC Talanta's defence in their opening FKFPL match.

AFC Leopards head coach Tom Juma has expressed concern at his side’s low fitness levels after they were held to a 0-0 draw despite having a one-man advantage after FC Talanta’s Lucas Weiterere was dismissed early in the second half for a second bookable offense.

Ingwe struggled to create a lot of chances from open play, having resorted to utilising set pieces to try and score goals, but did create at least three decent chances from open play, which they did not capitalise.

Juma believes his boys’ fitness levels are not ideal at the moment, but it is something he will try and work on.

“It was not a bad game but our fitness is not at the right place so we will try and address the remaining matches to see whether it will get better,” Juma said.

“I think it is just a fitness level issue. Towards the end, we got tired. If we work on our fitness issues, things will get better.”

Talanta has created a reputation for being disciplined without the ball, something Juma admits his side needs to work on in order to find space between the lines to create goal-scoring opportunities.

“When you are playing against a team that sits back so deep and plays with two banks of four, it becomes difficult to create chances because they do not open up the game.

“We knew that would happen, but we still created a few good chances. We only need one to convert the chances created, and the few we created, we should have utilised better.”

Juma admits it will be difficult to predict when the team will have jelled well ideally, with most of the players still trying to understand each other’s games.

“It is hard to predict but the thing here is to just keep working, especially in the areas we think are still not perfect. Our opponents have played a lot of games and you could tell their fitness levels were high.”

Leopards will face KCB in their second match of the season.
