FOOTBALL AFC Leopards’ Shikanda hits back at FKF boss over ‘sore losers’ tag

The Ingwe chairman was not impressed by sentiments made by the federation official following the ‘Ingo’ derby chaos.

AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has scoffed at Football Kenya Federation CEO Barry Otieno for what he terms as ‘unfair treatment’ in the wake of the heavy sanctions handed to the club last week.

Shikanda took issue with Otieno's sentiments over the weekend when he laid the blame on the Leopards hierarchy for instigating the chaos that led to the abandonment of Ingwe’s league match against Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium over a week ago.

The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee docked Leopards three points while awarding Homeboyz the abandoned match and ordered the club to pay a Ksh500,000 fine besides catering for medical costs incurred by center referee Michael Obuya, who was beaten by irate fans.

Ingwe were also ordered to play their next four league matches behind closed doors while the FKF Disciplinary Committee will open proceedings into the conduct of the club’s coach Patrick Aussems and his assistant Lawrence Webo.

“Before going to the pitch, team managers have to ensure the ambulance and security are in order. By regulation, if you get the ambulance is empty or security is not adequate, you have the right to refuse to play. That is when we punish the home team,” Otieno told Radio47 at the weekend.

“But according to the match official’s report, when both teams were supposed to check the security of the match venue, the Leopards team manager did not come. So, match officials and Kakamega Homeboyz officials confirmed and okayed the match.

“Leopards camp, did not raise a complaint and played. Then there was an incident where the Homeboyz goalkeeper allegedly handled the ball out of the box and from there, Leopards officials and coaches were annoyed, got the team out of the match venue, and told fans to come to the pitch.

“There have been issues with officiating, there are innocent mistakes, even in the EPL, 99 percent of the matches have been stopped to check VAR and also, there is match-fixing. Every weekend we have nine games, are we saying in every game a referee who makes mistakes should be beaten?”

Shikanda, however, disagrees with the FKF boss, insisting Homeboyz were at fault for not providing adequate security.

“We take issue with the Secretary General of the federation who seems to insinuate that there are teams known to abandon matches when they lose. We have lost five matches at home, did we cause chaos,” Shikanda posed, while speaking to Pulse Sports on Tuesday.

“When he says there was adequate security, what did they (security) do to stop the chaos? The security was there to watch the match?

“Our coaches have been accused of causing chaos but in fact, they were urging the players to get out the pitch to avoid danger.”

Leopards have already appealed the sanctions at the Sports Disputes Tribunal which started hearing the matter on Tuesday.
