The team was also hailed by captain Emilio Nsue (topscorer with five goals) as “one of the strongest in Africa” despite not “having any superstars."

On another day of what promises intense Africa Cup of Nations action, Equatorial Guinea take on Guinea in the Round of 16 at Stade Olympique Alessane Oattara, Abidjan, on Sunday.

Despite starting as serious underdogs in a group which had Nigeria and Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea came out on top with seven points.

Their 4-0 victory over the hosts (Ivory Coast) had the players receive a bonus of USD. 1 million from the government as a token of appreciation.

The team was also hailed by captain Emilio Nsue (topscorer with five goals) as “one of the strongest in Africa” despite not “having any superstars."

On the other hand, expectations are on the shoulders of Guinea despite their third-place finish in Group C behind Senegal and Cameroon.

It was their inferior tally of just two goals throughout the group stage, including just one against last-placed Gambia that saw them finish in third, albeit as the best-performing third-placed team on paper across the tournament.

Players to watch

Equatorial Guinean’s Emilio Nsue stood head and shoulders above his peers and rivals with five goals during the group stage, at least two more than any other player.

One of Guinea’s two goals came from 22-year-old midfielder Aguibou Camara, who has opened the scoring in each of Guinea’s last three victories.
