After seven months, the former Tottenham star is back in training
Nabil Bentaleb’s remarkable journey back to football has taken a significant step forward as the Lille OSC midfielder resumed training seven months after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The news, confirmed by head coach Bruno Génésio, brings hope to fans of both Lille and Algeria as the 30-year-old continues his road to recovery.
Bentaleb’s miraculous comeback almost complete
Bentaleb’s cardiac arrest on June 18, 2023, shocked the football world, casting doubt on whether he would ever play again.
His life was saved by the swift actions of a friend who administered CPR and used a defibrillator before first responders arrived.
Lille coach Génésio shared updates during a press conference ahead of the club’s Coupe de France clash against Olympique de Marseille.
“Nabil has been with us for a few days now,” he said, adding, “He resumed individual training with the ball. He’s well, in good spirits, and everyone is waiting for him.”
Algeria waiting on star man’s recovery
Bentaleb’s recovery has been guided by protocols established by the Dutch cardiologist who famously assisted Christian Eriksen’s return to football.
However, his full return to competitive action hinges on receiving a fitness certificate from specialist doctors.
Despite the medical setback, Bentaleb remains a key figure for Algeria’s national team as he has represented his country in multiple international tournaments, including the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as the 2023 AFCON.
As Bentaleb works towards regaining match fitness, fans will be hoping to see him on the pitch again soon, donning the Algerian and Lille jerseys.
