Ademola Lookman has been labeled "Africa’s best" by his Super Eagles teammate, Alex Iwobi, ahead of the 2024 CAF Player of the Year awards.
Lookman, who finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, has had an impressive season with Atalanta B.C.,with whom he won the Europa League.
His stellar performances have also placed him among the favourites to win the prestigious CAF award, set to take place on December 16 in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Iwobi’s endorsement came via a candid Snapchat clip taken aboard the Super Eagles team plane on their way to Abidjan, ahead of their AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic.
The Fulham midfielder shared a moment with teammates Calvin Bassey and Lookman, zooming in on the latter while declaring, “African best!”
This public show of support has only fueled the anticipation surrounding Lookman’s chances of clinching the award.
Ademola Lookman‘s rise and rise
At 27, Lookman has solidified his place as one of Africa’s brightest football talents.
This season, he has already contributed eight goals and five assists in 14 appearances for Atalanta, further establishing his reputation as a game-changer.
Should Lookman win the CAF Player of the Year award, the former Everton star will succeed compatriot Victor Osimhen, adding another chapter to Nigeria’s proud football legacy.
Notably absent from the final shortlist was Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface, who had been expected to compete for the honour, having won the Bundesliga and picked up the Rookie of the season award under Xabi Alonso.
However, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong remains in contention, keeping the spotlight firmly on Nigerian football.
The Super Eagles are set to return to action against Benin Republic in the AFCON 2025Q on Thursday, November 14, having already secured qualification from Group D.
Coverage of the game will be live on Pulse Sports Nigeria as from 7:00 PM W.A.T.
