The Dutch giants found themselves facing adversity, after going 10 matches without a win, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table.
However, a combination of managerial changes and the extraordinary performance of Nigeria’s Akpom has since brought about a remarkable change in favour of Ajax.
In two matches, the 28-year-old has now scored three goals, all as a substitute, with his latest a brace in the five-goal thriller against Heerenveen.
Akpom’s Impact
Known for his scoring ability, Akpom has now added impact as a substitute to his resume after his recent display.
The versatile player came off the bench to score the winner as Ajax ended a 10-game winless streak against Volendam on Thursday.
Three days later, he has now gone a step further with a brace for his club. Ajax were leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Steven Bergwijn and Brian Brobbey, with Luuk Brouwers pulling one back for the visitors.
Akpom’s first arrived nine minutes after he came on to double the lead before he added the second in added time to seal all three points.
The goals took his tally to three in the last two matches, with the Nigerian now playing a pivotal role in propelling Ajax to new heights after a disastrous start to the season.
Ajax have now moved from the bottom of the table to 11th on 11 points and will be counting on Akpom to keep moving up the table.
