FOOTBALL Ambani calls for prioritizing referee payments over delegates' suits at FKF AGM

Former Kenya international Boniface Ambani has criticized FKF for spending on 'suits' instead of paying referees' six-month wage arrears ahead of AGM.

On September 2023, the troubling state of Kenyan football was starkly highlighted when a Nairobi-based referee, part of the FKF Premier League, and his family were forced to spend a night out in the cold after being evicted for unpaid rent.

The referee, who chose to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation, highlighted the financial difficulties faced by those at the heart of the game, stemming from the Football Kenya Federation's failure to pay referees' salaries for six months.

Fast forward five months, and the situation appears unchanged, if not worsened, with referees still facing significant financial hardships.

Boniface Ambani, a former Kenyan international, has taken a bold stand against the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) ahead of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for March 16 in Nairobi.

Ambani's critique comes at a crucial time, emphasizing the misplaced priorities within the federation.

"Those suits you want to buy delegates, or club reps for that matter, for the FKF AGM, kindly use that money to pay referees. I believe club reps are people with means and they have not been walking naked," Ambani argued in his Facebook post.

The AGM is set to discuss crucial matters, including the dates and venue for the FKF Presidential elections and the appointment of an electoral body to oversee the process.

The elections, spurred by a letter from two National Executive Committee members to CAF and FIFA, criticize the federation's leadership vacuum and lack of proper governance, noting that no NEC meeting has occurred in the past three years.

This year's election, following the FKF Electoral Code, is anticipated with high interest, with several candidates, including Gor Mahia Secretary General Sam Ocholla and former international Sammy 'Kempes' Owino, expressing their intention to run for the presidency.
