Armand Duplantis was born in America, specifically in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Swedish parents. Duplantis came from a sporting background, as his father Greg Duplantis was a pole vaulter himself, and his mother Helena Duplantis (née Hedlund) was a long jumper and pentathlete.
Armand, along with his two older brothers Andreas and Antoine, and his younger sister Johanna, were introduced to sports at a young age by their parents.
His brothers have also made a name for themselves in sports: Andreas Duplantis, his older brother, is also a pole vaulter, representing Sweden at the 2009 World Youth Championships and 2012 World Junior Championships.
While Antoine Duplantis, his other older brother, initially pole vaulted but switched to baseball in high school. He went on to attend Louisiana State University, where he excelled in baseball, becoming the team's all-time leader in hits in 2019.
Armand started pole vaulting at age three and had already begun setting age-grade records at age seven. Despite growing up in an English-speaking country, he has taken up Swedish lessons and is somewhat proficient at it.

As stated earlier, he began pole vaulting at three years old. He had the choice of representing the USA; however, Swedish Olympic Pole Vault Youth coach Jonas Anshelm convinced him to represent Sweden by offering his father the national team coaching job.
He won the World Youth Championships in 2015, and two years later, he set the U-20 world record and the European Championships.
Duplantis jumped over 6.00m for the first time in 2018 when he leapt 6.05 m at the 2018 European Athletics Championships. His jump was the fifth-best in history and the second-best outdoors; at this point, those who did not already know him began to pay attention.
He only managed a silver medal at the IAAF World Championships in 2019, but less than a year later, he shattered the world record.
Armand first broke the world record on February 8, 2020, ending Renaud Lavillenie’s almost six-year reign as the pole vault record holder. He has held the record since then, breaking it himself on eight more occasions, as of August 15th.
