A section of Arsenal fans believe the Gunners have kissed their title dream goodbye after an underwhelming draw against Southampton.
The Premier League title race took another turn on Friday night, April 21, as Arsenal were held 3-3 by relegation-threatened Southampton at the Emirates.
Arsenal came into the contest as the favourites but endured a nightmare start to the six-goal thriller in North London on the night.
Rubén Sellés’ side took the lead after just 27 seconds into the kick-off when Aaron Ramsdale’s howler gifted Carlos Alcaraz the ball from a goal-kick, with the Argentinian gladly curling his shot into the top left-hand corner to give the Saints a shock 0-1 lead.
Southampton gained momentum and really took the contest to the hosts who were punished in the 15th once more by a former Gunner.
Alcaraz played Theo Walcott in, and the former Arsenal winger fired home to double Southampton’s advantage to the wild shock of the home fans.
However, six minutes later, Arsenal roared back into the contest as Bukayo Saka’s cross found Gabriel Martinelli, who fired home a first-time volley for his 15th league goal of the season.
Southampton nearly came close to scoring again but were denied by a smart double save from Ramsdale as the league leaders went into the break trailing by a slender lead.
Second Half: Arsenal vs Southampton
Arsenal began the second period with the belief they could turn the result around.
However, despite the slew of chances created by Mikel Arteta’s men, the Gunners failed to take their chances and soon conceded again with less than half an hour remaining when the unmarked Duje Caleta-Car headed home at the far post from a corner to make it 3-1 to the Saints.
The Gunners looked out of sorts following the goal, but soon found hope as Martin Ødegaard’s goal in the 88th minute gave the hosts some belief.
Arsenal’s late persistence paid off as Bukayo Saka fired home the equalizer in the 90th minute of stoppage time to set up a thrilling conclusion to the game.
However, Southampton held on for a crucial point as their race to survive relegation continues.
Meanwhile, for Arsenal, the draw against the Saints leaves them five points ahead of second-placed Man City, with the two teams set to clash in a potential title-deciding encounter next week Wednesday at the Etihad.
