The Gunners have sided with manager Mikel Arteta by calling for improvement in officiating in the Premier League after his furious rant following Newcastle United’s goal on Saturday

Arsenal have backed manager Mikel Arteta following his furious rant over Anthony Gordon's goal for Newcastle on Saturday and demanded that the PGMOL urgently improves the standard of officiating in the Premier League.

The Gunners were left fuming that Gordon's goal was allowed to stand following an extensive VAR review in the high-octane clash at St James’ Park.

Referee Stuart Attwell had struggled to keep control of the game and Arsenal bosses have now demanded that PGMOL chief Howard Webb takes action to improve the standards of his officials.

"Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta ’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening," the club said in a statement.

"We’d also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James’ Park. The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better.

"PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies. We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands."

Arteta launched a furious rant in his press conference following his side's first defeat of the season. He labelled the decision to award Gordon's goal as "embarrassing" and “disgraceful.”

"We have to talk about the result because you have to talk about how they help these goals stand up, and it's incredible. I feel embarrassed. But I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help because it’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed, it’s an absolute disgrace," said a furious Arteta.

"Because it’s not a goal, for many reasons it’s not a goal, for more than one reason at least it’s not a goal. And there’s too much at stake here, we put in so much effort, and it's so difficult to compete at this level. And it's an absolute disgrace. Again, I feel embarrassed.

"I've be more than 20 years in this country, and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world. I am sorry. That makes it even worse, makes it look even worse, it makes it even worse. You just need to see one image, that’s what you need, and you have any doubt you look at the second one. And if this is a goal, okay, that's fine.

"I don’t care honestly, I don’t care what they say. It’s the outcome. It's too late, whatever they say is too late. I don't want to be in the hands of people. I have to stand here now and explain, And we lost three points today, guys. You know what that means? It’s too hard, this league, it’s too hard, there is too much at stake. It's embarrassing."
