Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that the Gunners were motivated by revenge in their 2-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League.

Last season, Arsenal lost to Newcastle by a similar scoreline in the penultimate game of the 2021/22 campaign, effectively costing them a place in this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage.
With the Gunners defeating Newcastle and putting the Magpie's quest for a top-four place in jeopardy this season, Arteta has revealed that he used last season’s result and what it cost Arsenal to get his players to bring their A-game and secure a crucial win in the title race.
The win leaves Arsenal just a point behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, while Newcastle are now just three points ahead of Liverpool in fifth place, putting them at risk of missing out on a UCL qualification spot at the end of the season.
Arteta wanted to win to right last season’s wrongs
When asked what made his Arsenal side play with the way they did against Newcastle, Arteta answered, “The word was pain and then the desire for revenge.”
The Arsenal boss further explained that his side approached the game the way they did because they knew what to expect from Newcastle since they remember the fixture from last season.
“When you have the emotions we had last year you have to feel them again, realise how nasty they are, and approach the game differently. The boys did that well,” Arteta said.
“We had to feel it. It wasn’t enough just to talk about it. Not just the players but the staff as well. That feeling that we didn’t do enough that day.”
Arsenal will be glad to right the wrongs of the past year as the win keeps their title hopes alive for a few more days at least
