Southampton's early goal against Arsenal means the Gunners have managed to reach an unwanted low in the Premier League this season
Arsenal have reached an unwanted milestone with their calamitous start against Southampton, which saw them concede after only 27 seconds of the start of the match.
Arsenal suffer early blow against Southampton
The Gunners were hoping to bounce back from their recent slump in the league that saw them surrender two-goal leads in consecutive matches against Liverpool and West Ham when they took on bottom-of-the-table Southampton at the Emirates, but things have not gone according to plan for the Gunners, who let in a goal inside the first minute.
An errant pass by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale led to Carlos Alcaraz score a peach from outside the 18-yard box to give Southampton a 1-0 lead.
The goal after only 27 seconds was the Gunners’ second-fastest goal conceded this season after they conceded after only nine seconds against Bournemouth, and the second-fastest goal conceded by any team in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.
Arsenal suffering historic slow starts
Meaning that Arsenal have suffered the ignominy of conceding the two fastest goals in the Premier League this season, with both of them coming at the Emirates Stadium and both against teams who were in the relegation zone at the time of the match.
Arsenal fought back against Bournemouth to secure a dramatic 3-2 win in the first instance and will be hoping to do the same against Southampton if they have any hopes of keeping their dream of a first Premier League title since 2004 alive.
The Gunners need to find a solution to their recent slump ahead of their trip to the Etihad next week which in their current form could spell the end of their Premier League title chase.
