The Gunners could be in for a big summer as they plan to strengthen their squad with top players, and one position they are looking to improve is the striker role, with the club seemingly ready to act fast.

New sporting director Andrea Berta has come in to help guide transfers, and it looks like he’s already working on bringing in a new number nine.

Arsenal had been linked with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, but they believe a deal for him might not happen. Instead, their focus has turned to another Swedish striker, Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal have now stepped up their interest in Gyokeres and have been given permission by Sporting to speak directly with the player.

Gyokeres has been in fantastic form this season, scoring 43 goals in 43 matches. His performances have made him one of the most wanted strikers in Europe.

The Swedish forward has a release clause of £85 million, but reports suggest Sporting might accept a lower offer.

Arsenal believe signing Gyokeres would be easier than negotiating with Newcastle for Isak.

His agents are also expected to attend the Champions League clash between Arsenal and Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, and this could be an important step in finalising a potential summer move.

Berta is a big fan of Gyokeres and reportedly scouted him while working at Atletico Madrid. Now at Arsenal, he is pushing for the 25-year-old striker to join the Gunners as they prepare for another title challenge next season.
