After receiving treatment for his knee, Timber was cleared to return for the second half, however, he only played for a few minutes before being replaced by Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Gunners were eager to determine the exact extent of the damage, and they have now confirmed that he has in fact injured his ACL.

A statement on the club's website read as reported by Football London, "Further to detailed assessments with consultant specialists since Saturday, we can confirm that Jurrien Timber has sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

"Jurrien will undergo surgery in the coming days and will be out of action for a period of time.

"The support and expertise from our medical team and everyone at the club will now be focussed on Jurriens’ rehabilitation programme, to ensure he recovers well and is back playing as soon as possible."

Arsenal are waiting for confirmation before determining how the Dutch international responds to surgery. However, it's anticipated that Timber won't be available for a while.

Meanwhile, The 22-year-old responded to the news by posting the following message on his Instagram page, he said as reported by Football London, "Gutted to share my injury is more serious than expected, especially after the warm welcome I've received.

“I wanted to repay you on the pitch, which will not be possible for the forthcoming period. I'm blessed with a lot of great people around me, together we will do anything to get back as soon and strong as possible.

Arsenal will travel to Selhurst Park Stadium on Monday to face Crystal Palace in their second game of the season and will be without Jurien Timber.
