The Gunners were hoping for a chance to lift their first EFL Cup trophy under Mikel Arteta, but the Magpies had other ideas, shocking the Emirates Stadium with a brilliant win.

Newcastle hold out for first leg advantage

Thanks to two strikes either side of the half-time break from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, Newcastle enjoyed a stunning win against Arsenal, putting them in the driver’s seat of the EFL Cup semifinal tie.

With the second leg set to come up in a month’s time at Newcastle’s St. James Park, the Magpies will be confident of seeing out the tie on home soil for a place in the EFL Cup final.

Arsenal, who had the Lion’s share of possession, missed six chances, and hit the woodwork once, will have only themselves to blame after failing to capitalise on opportunities to turn the match around.

The Gunners must now win at Newcastle for the first time in two years to stand any chance of making it to the coveted final of the EFL Cup.
