The Brazilian has been a vital figure in Arsenal’s push to win the Premier League race.

Mikel Arteta has explained why Gabriel Martinelli has been so important for Arsenal this season.

The Brazilian, after a six-game run without a goal to kick off 2023, has been in good form in recent weeks.

He has been directly involved in a goal in seven of his last eight league outings, while three of his four best-rated league performances this season, according to Whoscored, have come in his last six appearances.

"He’s playing more games, that’s for sure. He’s got another year of experience, he’s got a huge understanding now with his teammates," Arteta explained.

"The way he approaches every single session, the way he approaches his training, his life - he just has to be the best."

Whereas the Spaniard is convinced his forward, who has cemented his place on the left side of Arsenal’s attack, has been important, he states there is room for him to improve.

"When that happens, and you have the consistency that he has in how he deals with every situation every day, only good outcomes are going to be in front of him," he added.

"I’m not surprised about that, and he still has a lot of things to improve on."

Arteta also spoke on Aaron Ramsdale’s form this season: "You need individuals to perform at the highest level, and certainly, you need your keeper to be impressive in certain moments.

"You see, every team that has won titles, their goalkeeper is just a key contributor to that, and Aaron has been really, really good this season."

The Gunners are at the top of the table as the Premier League race enters a crucial juncture, and Arteta discussed whether they need luck in the run.

"You need luck in the right moments," he said.

"Why that luck comes is really important, how you think about it and what’s going to happen. It’s another part of this sport; sometimes it’s about inches, and those inches need to go your way."

The Gunners will be at the London Stadium on Sunday for a game against West Ham United.
