U-20 AFCON As it happened: The Young Scorpions knock out Flying Eagles

Joba Ogunwale 17:43 - 06.03.2023

Adama Bojang put Gambia ahead against Ladan Bosso's men after just seven minutes as Abdullahi misses a penalty for Nigeria.

  • The Scorpions will now meet Senegal in Saturday's final while Nigeria take on Tunisia in the third-place match. That is the end of our live coverage. Thank you and bye for now.
  • Adama Bojang's seventh minute opener was all Gambia needed to reach their first AFCON U-20 final. Nigeria did not offer much but Abdullahi will definitely regret his late penalty miss.
  • Full-time. Nigeria 0-1 Gambia.
  • That was a big moment but the late drama continues as Njie is sent off for Gambia after receiving a second yellow card. Five minutes for The Scorpions to survive.
  • He misses. Abdullhahi hits the post from the resulting penalty. What a let off for Gambia and a big opportunity missed for Nigeria.
  • Big decision!! Penalty for Nigeria.
  • Big hance for Nigeria. Abdullahi was picked out perfectly but the number nine dribbled too much before the ball was taken off his leg by Gambia's goalkeeper. However, there is a VAR check for a potential penalty.
  • Big chance.  The resulting freekick was floated into the box but somehow Gambia were able to block three goal bound attempts.
  • Fifteen minutes left in this boring match but Nigeria have a freekick in a dangerous area,
  • Gambia made changes of their own. In fairness, they do not have to because Nigeria have offered nothing. It has been a disappointing game so far.
  • Ten minutes into the second half. Bosso has had enough. He turns to his bench bringing on Ahmed Abdullahi and Jude Sunday.
  • We are back underway at the Cairo International Stadium.
  • One surprising stat from the first half is that Nigeria had ten corners but could not make it count.
  • Half-time: Nigeria 0-1 Gambia
  • A lot off huffing and Puffing from Nigeria but it has really be a sterile display from Bosso's men. Something needs to change as we head to half-time.
  • For the first time in this game, there is panic in Gambia's backline after miscommunication between the keeper and defender. However, luckily Hairu Sariki's effort from outside the box was just wide. A big let off.
  • Even though they are still shading possession, Nigeria are yet to respond since falling behind. On the other hand, the Gambians look dangerous on the break.
  • Nigeria had the early possession but it is Gambia that take the lead after just seven minutes. Adama Bojang capitalises on a poor back pass from Onuche Ogbelu to finish past Aniagbaso.
  • 7' GOAL!!!!! Nigeria 0-1 Gambia.
  • Bosso's men are dominating the early proceedings but no real chance yet.
  • A friendly reminder that the winner tonight will take on Senegal in the final. The Teranga Lions outclassed Tunisia to book their place in the final. They are certainly the favourites in the final.
  • 1' KICK OFF
  • You can vote for the man of the match even before kick-off. By the way, VAR is in play tonight, so there should not be controversy.
  • The players are out for the national anthem, with Nigeria singing Arise O compatriots first. What a national anthem, although I hope the boys are not interested in choosing Music as a second hustle.
  • Nigeria are royalty in this competition, having won it seven times. But they face a tough match against Gambia tonight. The Gambians beat Sudan 5-0 to reach the semi-final.
  • The teams news are out, with Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso going for his strongest side.
  • It is a big one in Cairo this evening as Nigeria's Flying Eagles take on Gambia for a place in the AFCON U-20 final. The Flying Eagles are hoping to reach their tenth final while Gambia are seeking a first final appearance after two third-place medals.
